Zoya AKhtar RESPONDS to The Archies cast facing nepotism backlash: "It's really sad because there are 4 other kids being launched"

Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar has responded to the nepotism debate surrounding her upcoming Netflix film The Archies, which marks the debut of Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda, and Khushi Kapoor. While acknowledging the importance of the conversation around privilege, Zoya argues that the discussion is often lacking in nuance.

In an interview with Indian Express, Zoya said, "I feel it doesn’t hold at all. There are seven people in the film, but people are only talking about three. Some people don’t even know their first names!" She further explained, "It's really sad because there are four other kids being launched and they were robbed off that moment. I feel bad for them, they were equally excited, even their parents. That's not fair. That's not something that we or Netflix did."

Zoya points out that the nepotism debate often overlooks the struggles and achievements of outsiders in the industry. She cites Reema Kagti, her co-producer on The Archies, as an example. Despite being an industry kid herself, Reema made her directorial debut before Zoya did.

The Archies, an adaptation of the iconic Archie comics, also stars Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Vedang Raina and Yuvraj Menda. The film is set to release on Netflix on December 7, 2023.
