When Sharmila Tagore came to Farida Jalal's aid when Rajesh Khanna refused to rehearse romantic scene

Farida Jalal recently revealed how Sharmila Tagore supported her during the filming of the iconic 1969 film Aradhana. Despite the movie’s enduring popularity, the set wasn’t always a harmonious place. In an interview with Zoom, Jalal shared her experience of feeling nervous and inexperienced, particularly during a romantic scene with Rajesh Khanna, who refused to rehearse.

Protective mentor

Tagore, who starred alongside Khanna in the film, played a pivotal role in easing Jalal's anxiety. Recalling her time on set, Jalal said, "Sharmila ji, whom I used to call Rinku di, was a pillar of support. She is beautiful from within and was always protective of me. Every time something happened, and she saw my face drop, she would come and stand beside me. She would even dismiss Rajesh Khanna if needed."

Challenging scene

Jalal described her apprehension while shooting the romantic song ‘Baghon Mein Bahar Hai’ with Khanna. "I was so conscious and asked for an extra rehearsal. Rajesh Khanna’s dismissive response put me off for the rest of the film. That’s when Rinku di came to my support, insisting, ‘How can you say this? We will have 10 more rehearsals.’ She was a darling.”

Legacy of Aradhana

Aradhana received widespread acclaim upon its release, particularly for its soundtrack by S.D. Burman, and became one of the biggest hits in Hindi cinema at the time.

Farida's recent work

Farida Jalal was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which premiered on Netflix last month and has already been renewed for a second season.
