Manoj Bajpayee says he “quit” dancing after watching Hrithik Roshan; recalls his theatre days

With one National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and two Filmfare awards, actor Manoj Bajpayee has impressed the audience with his art. Although his last theatrical release was in 2020, he has continued to entertain the audience with his web projects. Currently, he is busy with promotions of his upcoming film Gulmohar, which will be streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. While promoting his film, the critically acclaimed actor revealed that he was a trained dancer, but quit after he saw Hrithik Roshan. It all happened during his candid chat with Curly Tales. During his chat with the portal, Manoj recalled that it was a prerequisite for a theatre artist to sing and dance. He asserted, “Since I'm from theatre, there used to be a prerequisite that an artist should know how to sing. Even if you do not become a frontline singer, you must be a chorus singer at least. Haan, main naachta bhi tha (Yes, I used to dance as well).” He further explained, “Main Chhau dance mein trained hoon lekin jab Hrithik aya na. Maine Hrithik ko dekha toh maine kaha aaj ke baad dancing ka khwaab band kyuki ab ye nahi seekh sakta main (I'm trained in Chhau dance but when Hrithik came in the industry and I saw his performance, I told myself 'this is the end of my dream of dance as I can't learn this).” For the unversed, Bajpayee started his acting career back in 1994 with Drohkaal. However, his breakout film Satya was released in 1998. Meanwhile, Hrithik made his debut with Kaho Na Pyaar Hai in 2000. The song ‘Sapne Mein Milti Hai’ from Satya turned out to be a chartbuster. When asked to comment on that, the actor stated he had already done whatever dance he had to do before Hrithik's debut. Coming back to Gulmohar, helmed by Rahul V. Chittella, the upcoming family drama also features Sharmila Tagore, Suraj Sharma, and Amol Palekar, among others. As mentioned above, it will be released digitally on March 3.
