20 Years Of Main Hoon Na: Farah Khan talks about shooting for ‘Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai’: “The swans would turn green in the coloured water. In today’s times, PETA would have come and caught us”

Main Hoon Na (2004), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan and Amrita Rao, completed 20 years on April 30. Directed by Farah Khan, the film is remembered for many reasons, one of them being the memorable music score. Every song is memorable even today and the one that stood out was ‘Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai’. Composed by Anu Malik, it comes at a crucial juncture in the movie and shot in a stunning set. Director Farah Khan shared interesting trivia about shooting this song on Rajeev Masand’s audio show ‘Picture Ke Peeche’.

Farah Khan made it clear that she was inspired by Bombay Dreams, a Broadway musical which she choreographed in London in 2002. She said, “I had just come from choreographing in Bombay Dreams, which also had a qawwali. Actually, I used to love qawwali songs in general, even in films like Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977). Also, this was the year 2004 when everyone was doing a bhangra song. I told Anu Malik ‘I want a qawwali song on acid’! We shot it also like that, like a rock qawwali track.”

The use of colours, water and the birds gave a nice touch to the song. But it also led to unexpected and amusing challenges. She admitted, “The swans really troubled us. We had put colour in the water and hence the swans would turn green. (In today’s times), PETA would have come and caught us!”

Many might find the set a bit gaudy, but it was visually appealing and added to the song’s charm. She stared, “I went full kitsch. I was like ‘it should look like a Gemini Pictures song’.”

The popularity of the songs paid off; Anu Malik won the award for Best Music at the 50th Filmfare Awards for Main Hoon Na. The film was nominated in 11 categories, and this was the only category in which it emerged victorious.
