25 Years of Biwi No 1 EXCLUSIVE: “Salman Khan toh RAJA aadmi hai; uske saath bond kisi ka kharab ho hi nahin sakta hai” – Vashu Bhagnani

The much-loved entertainer, Biwi No 1 (1999), completed 25 years on May 28. The film was a super-hit thanks to its plot, a message that appealed to the families and ladies, performances, super-hit music and also because producer Vashu Bhagnani took the risk of releasing the David Dhawan directorial during the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999. The risk paid off. It was the second-biggest opener of the year and also the second-biggest grosser of 1999, surpassing films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Sarfarosh, etc.

For Vashu Bhagnani, one of the reasons why Biwi No 1 was special was because it was his second film with superstar Salman Khan, the first being Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998). Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke with the reputed producer about the 25th anniversary of Biwi No 1 and he had some interesting things to say about Salman Khan.

When asked how his bond with Salman was, Vashu Bhagnani smiled and replied, “Uske saath bond kisi ka kharab ho hi nahin sakta hai. Woh toh raja aadmi hai (smiles).”

Vashu Bhagnani explained, “There are these superstars – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan – I don’t think they can ever have a bad equation with anyone. Yeh sab acche insaan hai and hence, they are still on top. Agreed that they are busy and it’s difficult to meet them. But they have dedicated their lives to their fans and admirers.”

He then gave the example of the cult TV show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ featuring Amitabh Bachchan, “Jab Amit ji TV pe aate hai KBC pe, log apne ghar mein khade ho jaate hai as if he has come into their homes for real. That’s the charisma he and other stars have.”

Besides Salman Khan, Biwi No 1 also starred Karisma Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Tabu and Sushmita Sen with Saif Ali Khan in a cameo.
