The musical entertainer Taal (1999), directed by Subhash Ghai, completed 25 years on August 13. The film starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshaye Khanna is remembered for its great performances, grandeur, dramatic and romantic moments and above all, a legendary soundtrack by A R Rahman. Apart from the lead actors, the supporting actors also did a fine job and one of them was Mita Vashisht. In May, Bollywood Hungama spoke to her exclusively at the premiere of The Shameless at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. During this interaction, we also asked her about the 25th anniversary of Taal.
The author began by saying how her haircut suited the character of the film. She added, “And it was my original haircut! Let me tell you that my look in Taal was not designed by Mr Subhash Ghai at all. That’s how I was. He made me wear my clothes in the film. He commented, ‘Yeh bada acchha hai. Isko pehnna film mein’. I was not even smart enough to charge him for it (laughs)!”
Those were the days when female characters with shorter haircuts would be given the role of a vamp. But her character was not. Mita Vashisht explained, “Yes, but that’s how she was. She was a single mother and a presenter at MTV. She was independent; she liked to smoke cigarettes and have a drink once in a while.”
She revealed, “Subhash Ghai would make fun of me. On the first day, he suggested, ‘Tum aise karo Prabha ki acting’. I replied, ‘Subhash ji, you are a nice roly-poly, plump man. I am a slim girl with toned muscles. Your gestures don’t suit me. So, do you want me to play Prabha, or do you want me to play Subhash Ghai?’. He said, ‘Tum badi badtmeez ho. Aise koi bolta hai?’. I reasoned, ‘Main bol rahi hoon kyunki aap mere acting mein gadbad kar doge’! He then grinned and let me play the role my way (laughs).”
When asked about her experience of working with Aishwarya Rai, Mita Vashisht said, “She had just started out in films and was very sweet. I was also one of the judges on Miss India (where she was the second runner-up). Even now, she’s sweet and humble. Taal and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) made her a big star.”
