Arjun Kapoor recalls Alia Bhatt getting hate for playing South Indian girl in 2 States: “Just kept her head down and worked”

Arjun Kapoor, who was last seen in Singham Again, recently opened up about the online trolling his co-star Alia Bhatt faced for her portrayal of Ananya Swaminathan in 2 States. The film, based on Chetan Bhagat's popular novel 2 States: The Story of My Marriage, sees Alia playing a Tamil Brahmin woman from Chennai. However, her casting in the role sparked controversy, with many netizens voicing their displeasure over her being cast as a South Indian character.

Alia Bhatt Faces Backlash for Her 'South Indian' Role In a conversation with Mashable India, Arjun Kapoor discussed the backlash Alia faced after the film's release. Many felt that Alia did not fit the visual representation of a South Indian woman, especially considering her previous work in Student of the Year, a film that did not provide the kind of recognition needed to land such a role. Arjun explained, “There were also other big names that were considered exciting and visually relevant for the role. But Alia just kept her head down and worked.”

Despite the criticism, Alia did not let it affect her performance. “She did an audition, she did a photoshoot and that was the day they decided that she is the right choice for the role,” Arjun added. Alia Bhatt’s Transformation and Success in Highway and 2 States Arjun also mentioned that Alia was filming for Imtiaz Ali's Highway simultaneously while working on 2 States. Highway was released just before 2 States and marked a significant shift in how audiences viewed Alia Bhatt’s acting prowess. “Highway released just before 2 States and the world’s opinion of Alia Bhatt changed completely in just one Friday,” he remarked.

The film, which also featured Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh, Revathi, and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam, went on to become a success, despite the initial criticism that Alia faced for her portrayal of Ananya.
