This year has been a mixed bag for Bollywood. The biggest box office clash of 2024 was Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again, which released during Diwali. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh looked back at the box office battle between the two films. He said that there was a time when a clash at the ticket window was fine between two or even more films.
“I have always felt that it’s okay for two films to clash and it’s a democracy,” he said. “I have said that a holiday period can accommodate that. It has happened in the past where two or maybe more films have come during a festival or non-festival and have worked at the box office.”
However, Adarsh believes that the current times are not conducive for clashes. “The problem is the negativity that comes in on social media and from within the film industry,” he said. “Within the film industry as in, both the distributors are fighting with each other to get the screens and shows. I feel it’s not the right step now because I feel there was so much bitterness and negativity.”
Adarsh also pointed out that the release of your film should be like a celebration for the crew but it’s the opposite in today’s era. “I have always felt when you make a film and release it, it calls for celebration because you have spent very precious one, two or three years to that film. When you release it and there is so much of negativity happening, instead of celebrating you are in a very foul mood. Your mood has gone for a toss and you are not just smiling; you don’t know what’s happening. So, I guess a situation like that needs to be avoided.”
In terms of business, he added, “Also at the same time, I feel clashes today are not too healthy in terms of numbers. The screens and shows get divided and that reflects in the business.”
