“It’s not PAN INDIA anymore, but it is TELUGU INDIA”: Ram Gopal Varma speaks on success of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) recently took to social media to share his thoughts on Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, particularly praising Allu Arjun’s portrayal of the titular character, Pushpa Raj. In a series of tweets and a detailed review, RGV hailed the film as a landmark in Indian cinema and Allu Arjun as a transformative force in the industry.

RGV's Bold Tweet: Telugu Cinema Reigns Supreme In one of his tweets, RGV declared: "The BIGGEST HINDI FILM ever in HISTORY of BOLLYWOOD is a DUBBED TELUGU FILM #Pushpa2. The BIGGEST HINDI FILM ACTOR in HISTORY of BOLLYWOOD is a TELUGU ACTOR @alluarjun who CAN’T SPEAK HINDI. So it’s not PAN INDIA anymore, but it is TELUGU INDIA."

A Character That Feels Real Earlier, RGV shared a comprehensive review of Allu Arjun’s character Pushpa Raj, describing it as "sharply etched" and "extremely rare" in Indian cinema. He lauded the character's blend of innocence and cunning, as well as Arjun’s ability to immerse himself in the role, effectively suspending disbelief for the audience.

"Seeing a character like Pushpa is one of those extremely rare occurrences. I actually believed that a character like Pushpa can really exist in reality, even though it’s placed within a very commercial, mainstream format that often suspends reality," RGV wrote.

He added that Pushpa’s contrasting traits, including a mix of vulnerability and a superego, were handled with finesse. RGV praised the decision to depict Pushpa’s physical deformity—a shoulder issue—and how it was transformed into a symbol of strength through Arjun’s innovative body language and gestures.

My REVIEW of the CHARACTER of PUSHPA in #pushpa2 —Ram Gopal Varma It is extremely rare that Indian films have sharply etched characters and it is even more rare that a star himself will ignore his own image and literally become the character

“A Seamless Blend of Character and Film” RGV also highlighted how Allu Arjun's performance elevated the film: "Even some unrealistic scenes seem real, creating a seamless blend wherein it’s difficult to tell whether the character is giving rise to the film or the film is giving rise to the character."

He admired Arjun’s pitch-perfect performance, which balanced action, emotion, and subtlety. RGV pointed out memorable moments, such as Pushpa’s emotional turmoil when the Chief Minister refuses to pose with him and his struggle to apologize to his wife after getting drunk.

In his signature style, RGV concluded: "After immensely enjoying the journey through Pushpa’s character, I think even the original @alluarjun will fall short." The Success of Pushpa 2 Sukumar’s Pushpa 2: The Rule continues the story of Pushpa Raj, who has risen from a daily wage worker to running a red sanders smuggling syndicate. Rashmika Mandanna plays Srivalli, Pushpa’s wife, while Fahadh Faasil reprises his role as police officer Bhanwar Singh Shekawat. The film ends on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for Pushpa 3: The Rampage.
