Actress Upasana Singh recently opened up about her missed opportunity to play the lead role of Suman in the 1989 blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya. Speaking in an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Upasana shared how she was the first choice for the role that ultimately went to Bhagyashree. The revelation provided a fascinating insight into the casting process of the iconic film, which marked the debut of Salman Khan as a leading man.
Director Sooraj Barjatya Initially Selected Upasana Singh
Recalling her first interaction with director Sooraj Barjatya, Upasana revealed that he was impressed with her audition. “He told me everything about the film and my role. And he selected me. After that, he said, ‘You come tomorrow and meet my father, but from my end, you are okay.’” However, when she met Sooraj’s father, Raj Kumar Barjatya, the decision changed.
“They did not say rejected, but they never called me again,” Upasana said. Years later, during the shooting of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Raj Kumar Barjatya revealed to the cast, including Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan, that Upasana was their original choice for Suman.
The Real Reason for Rejection
Upasana went on to reveal the real reason she was not cast. According to her, the filmmakers decided to cast someone shorter than Salman Khan for better on-screen chemistry. “They wanted someone who was a little shorter than Salman so that’s why they didn’t cast me. They were not lying,” she explained. Upasana Singh’s Career Journey Although she missed the opportunity to debut in Maine Pyar Kiya, Upasana Singh has had a successful career in the entertainment industry. She later worked with the Rajshri Productions team and has become a household name, particularly for her comedic roles on television, including her popular stint on The Kapil Sharma Show.
