Atlee, known for his blockbuster films and mass appeal, recently delivered a stirring motivational speech at a college event about ignoring negativity and staying focused on one's dreams. Addressing an enthusiastic audience, the filmmaker emphasized the importance of resilience, urging the generation to believe in their journey regardless of criticism.
The filmmaker said, “There was a village, where people used to sit and talk. During that, a simple looking guy like me was working around there. People saw him and based on his looks, assumed he was a bad guy. They pointed him as a thief, and the news spread across the whole village and reached the police. The police arrested him on a theft case and during the court hearing and integration, it was found that he is innocent and was released. The judge questioned the police, ‘On what basis did you arrest this guy?’”
Atlee added, “The police replied, ‘The people of the town were talking and even the head of the village said so.’ The judge then ordered the police to call the head of the village. When the head of the village arrived, the judge asked, ‘Why did you suspect him as a thief?’ The head of the village replied, ‘Just randomly we were talking, he even looks like that only’. The judge said, ‘You are the one who will be punished for this. Go home. Write down everything you spoke about this guy on paper, bring it to me’. The head of the village wrote it down and gave it to the judge. The judge then said, ‘Tear this paper into 20 pieces and throw it away’. The head of the village did as told. The judge said, ‘Let's meet after lunch’. After lunch, the judge asked, ‘Now bring back the paper you wrote about the guy’.”
The filmmaker added, “The head of the village said, ‘The paper would have flown away by now’. The judge said, ‘Exactly’. This is what happens when you speak about someone without knowing them. It is spread everywhere and this is called negativity. Without knowing a person, we start hating them and speaking badly about them, we don't deserve that. No one deserves that’.”
Atlee continued, “Think about one person's appraisal card, how his parents raised him, and yet just like this, his reputation is ruined. I'm telling you this because you are the next generation. Don't blindly believe everything you see on Twitter and Instagram about a person. Don't ruin your life by believing rumors. The ones posting them are making a lot of money, but I think at least the next generation should carry some positivity. Ignoring negativity is a different route, and not creating negativity is another, so my route is not to create negativity.”
Atlee’s words resonated deeply with the audience, reminding them that challenges are inevitable, but one’s response to them defines success. Atlee is renowned for weaving socially relevant themes into his cinematic narratives, using his films as a powerful medium to mirror society’s realities. Right from his debut film Raja Rani, which sensitively explored love, loss, and second chances, to his latest blockbuster Jawan, he has consistently addressed pressing social issues that resonate with the masses.
In Theri, he highlighted the importance of women's safety and the need for stricter laws to protect them, while Mersal shed light on the flaws within the healthcare system and the struggles of the underprivileged. With Bigil, he championed women’s empowerment by showcasing the journey of a women’s football team fighting against societal odds. However, it was Jawan that took his socially conscious storytelling to a grander scale, addressing issues like child trafficking, corruption, and the role of responsible governance in national welfare.
Through his films, Atlee doesn’t just entertain but also sparks crucial conversations, making his cinema both impactful and commercially successful. His ability to blend mass appeal with meaningful storytelling ensures that his messages reach a wide audience, solidifying his reputation as a filmmaker who not only observes society but actively voices its concerns through his craft.
