Chandan Roy Sanyal on Mahakumbh stampede: "Can't imagine what the families went through"

Actor Chandan Roy Sanyal, who recently attended the ongoing Maha Kumbh, expressed his sorrow over the tragic stampede that claimed more than 30 lives. Calling the incident “sad and shocking,” the actor shared his thoughts on the sheer scale of the event and the faith that drives millions to the holy gathering.

A divine invitation to the kumbh Chandan, who was in Lucknow for an event, was invited by the organizers to visit the Maha Kumbh. He describes it as “divine intervention” that the trip came together. Recounting his journey, he said, “Yeh sab cheezein apne aap ho jaati hain. Mujhe bulawa aaya, toh main aa gaya idhar! I reached on February 10 and got to stay for five days.” This was his first experience at the Kumbh, and he was in awe of its magnitude. “Millions of people were there. I am privileged because I got to fly in an aeroplane, was fetched from the airport, put up in a hotel near the ghat. I saw millions walking on the roads, with their kids on their head. It shows the faith people have.”

Reflections on the stampede The stampede, which left families grieving and shattered, was a shocking moment for many. Speaking on the tragedy, Chandan said, “It’s sad and shocking. So many people lost their lives, so many families lost and their source of livelihood. What they went through... I can’t even imagine.” However, he added that he was not deterred from attending the Maha Kumbh despite the tragic incident. “I wasn’t apprehensive about going there (Maha Kumbh) though.”

A deeply rooted spiritual connection Coming from a deeply religious family, Chandan credits his upbringing for his spiritual beliefs. “My mother is very religious; my father was too. They would go to Haridwar, Banaras. In fact, I took some gangajal for her this time. She would take me to the Durga temple when I was a kid, during Durga Puja.” Over time, he has nurtured a profound spiritual connection. “As I grew up, I read Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda and became spiritual. I sincerely respect all forms of religion and faith. I don’t believe in one God, but a divine power, because of whom everything happens.”
