More than just Choocha: Why filmmakers keep coming back to Varun Sharma when they are in need of a naturally humorous actor

There’s a reason why filmmakers return to certain actors from time and again—because they bring something irreplaceable to the table. In the realm of comedy, that name is Varun Sharma. With a filmography packed with hilarious performances, Varun has carved a niche for himself through his comic timing, wit, and characters that linger long after the credits roll. From Choocha in Fukrey series to Sexa in Chhichhore, he has managed to tickle the audience’s funny bone regularly.

Varun Sharma’s strength lies in the authenticity he brings to humor. He doesn’t just act—he inhabits his characters, making them so relatable that audiences see themselves (or at least their mischievous best friend) in his performances. Directors across genres and sensibilities—from Mrigdeep Singh Lamba to Nitesh Tiwari, Rohit Shetty, and Hardik Mehta—have tapped into his ability to turn the simplest lines into moments of pure comic extravaganza. His expressions, pauses and the way he delivers even a throwaway joke are things that not many are capable of

But beyond the laughter, there’s a deeper thread he brings heart to his characters. Whether it’s Sexa’s camaraderie in Chhichhore or Rajesh Khanna’s emotional turmoil in Wild Wild Punjab, Varun ensures his performances aren’t just about laughs but also about connection. His characters become part of pop culture. His dialogues are quoted, his scenes replayed, and his performances revisited.

In an industry where comic roles often fall into cliché, Varun injects originality into every performance. His knack for improvisation, his ability to land a punchline with precision, and his natural charm make him what he is today. At a time when comedy is evolving—where humor needs to be smart, relatable, and effortless—Varun Sharma remains as one of the top names in the genre. Not just as an actor, but as a performer who understands what makes people laugh and why laughter matters. And as long as audiences crave that perfect mix of humor, heart, and sheer entertainment, one thing is certain—Varun Sharma will keep delivering.

When asked about his take on Varun’s ability as a comic actor, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, “I was very impressed with him from his first film itself when Varun started out. Some people have that very natural comic timing, which is very rare. There are a lot of comic actors around, but to get the natural flair for comedy is very difficult. Either you make people laugh on your jokes or make people laugh at you. There is a difference between that. But he makes people laugh on his jokes; that’s more important. The sense of humour and the funny bone that he has, it tickles the other people’s funny bone also. Everyone doesn’t have that comic timing.”

Despite playing a funny guy time and again, Varun continues to get appreciated each time. To this, Adarsh added, “One of the biggest hits of his career and a landmark franchise is Fukrey. When you are carrying the baggage of such a great franchise, people start drawing parallels with the other performances. But I feel as long as you get that character right, which you are portraying, it’s good. Apart from Fukrey, he was also very funny in other films also.”
