The 2nd Red Lorry Film Festival 2025 commenced today, that is, Friday, March 21 and the opening film was Karz (1980). The screening was attended by the film’s director Subhash Ghai and its actors Tina Ambani, Simi Garewal and Abha Dhulia. Lead actor Rishi Kapoor is no more and he was represented by his wife, Neetu Kapoor. The others present at the screening were co-producer Jagjit Khorana, producer Akhtar Farooqui’s son Raju Farooqui, cinematographer Kamalakar Rao and Subhash Ghai’s wife and daughter Mukta Ghai and Meghna Ghai Puri.
Subhash Ghai felicitated all of them with trophies. He said, “I am so thankful for Tina ji to come here to pay tribute to this film. Mrs Neetu Kapoor is here for our darling, Mr Rishi Kapoor. Above all, we also have Simi Garewal. She gave the greatest performance. I am sure you got a Filmfare Award for Karz, isn’t it?”
Simi Garewal laughed and replied in the negative. Subhash remarked, “No? Their loss!” It was Padmini Kolhapure who won the award for Best Supporting Actress that year for Insaaf Ka Tarazu.
Neetu Kapoor revealed, “I started dating (Rishi Kapoor) when he was making Karz. By the time it was released, Rishi and I were already married!” Subhash Ghai raised laughs as he said, “If you date while working on my film, you’ll surely get married (laughs)!”
While Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor got married on January 22, 1980, Karz released the same year on June 11. A memorable moment of the afternoon was when Neetu Kapoor was handed the trophy, she looked at Rishi’s picture on the screen and raised her hand towards it as if handing him the memorabilia.
Tina Munim also added to the fun as she quipped, “This is the first trophy that I have ever received!” The graceful Simi Garewal praised Subhash Ghai for opening Whistling Woods International and thus, giving back to the film industry.
Cinematographer Kamalakar Rao was humbled as he received the trophy. Subhash Ghai stated, “Chintu and I used to give him a lot of challenges. We would be like ‘Can we do this’, ‘Can we do that’. Aur woh karke dikhate the, woh bhi bahut hi excellent tareeke se!”
