EXCLUSIVE: Applause Entertainment CCO Deepak Segal on Search, “Adapting international crime shows is easier as murders happen here as well as there”; also reveals why the Konkona Sen Sharma starrer is based in Navi Mumbai

Applause Entertainment’s OTT show Search: The Naina Murder Case started streaming on JioHotstar recently from October 10. Directed by Rohan Sippy, it stars Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead role of an investigating police officer. The story is set in Navi Mumbai.

When the CCO (Chief Creative Officer), Applause Entertainment, was asked the reason for setting the story in Navi Mumbai in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, he said, “Navi Mumbai is an interesting space because it is slightly planned than Mumbai. The landmarks are different. Otherwise, in Bombay we have done too much of the shots of Sea Link and Marine Drive. So, it gave us a strong urban setting. It is also very close to the backwaters of Thane Creek. Those marshes and all are a part of the landscape. In Bombay, we will need to go to Mithi River but that is so crowded.”

Over the years, Applause has received a lot of applause for a number of shows like Scam 1992, Scam 2003, Criminal Justice and the upcoming Gandhi. Sharing their criteria to back shows, Segal said, “The main thing in this line is storytelling. You must, first of all, enjoy the story you are going to tell. We don’t build projects like, ‘We got these two actors, so quickly weave a story around them’. We always start with the story. In OTT, all actors have got a second lease of life and they have proved their worth to the audience by coming on OTT shows.”

Applause has adapted quite a few international shows in Hindi. Speaking about the same, he said, “If a show that has done well abroad, we see if it can be adapted easily in India. Some shows that have done well are old shows when there were no mobile phones in the world. But if we adapt them today, we will need to include mobile phones. So, you need to localize it time and culture wise. Crime thrillers are easier to fit because murders happen here as well as there.”

Over the years, Applause has had a steady partnership with filmmaker Rohan Sippy. Apart from Search, he has directed three seasons of Criminal Justice, The Office and Mithya for them. “That is down to a sense of tuning,” said Segal. “When you are writing and wondering who can direct this, then Rohan is our default choice (laughs).”

Search: The Naina Murder Case also stars Surya Sharma, Shiv Pandit and Shraddha Das in pivotal roles.
