EXCLUSIVE: For the FIRST time, Ramesh Sippy opens up on his ACTION-packed cameo as young Pran in Bewaqoof: “Somebody else was supposed to play the part; I S Johar wasn’t happy…I volunteered”

We all know of Ramesh Sippy of Sholay (1975) fame as a blockbuster director and enterprising producer. But it is hardly known that he has also tried his hand in acting. In his last directorial, Shimla Mirchi (2020), starring Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh and the Dream Girl, Hema Malini, the filmmaker had an adorable special appearance. But that’s not all. He had an action-packed cameo in a 1960 film too. Ramesh Sippy opened up about this unknown trivia during an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama on 50 years of Sholay.

In Bewaqoof, starring Kishore Kumar and Mala Sinha, Ramesh Sippy played the role of the young Pran who knocks the teenaged Kishore Kumar cold in a boxing ring. The writer asked that since he was so confident on screen, did he ever thought of taking up acting? Ramesh Sippy said, “Not really. It wasn’t my desire to act. I just did it.”

When asked about his cameo in Bewaqoof, he replied, “It was a small part. I played the villain, the young Pran. These things happen at the spur of the moment. Somebody else was supposed to play the part. But Mr I S Johar wasn’t too happy with his performance. He was trying to see if somebody else could be cast. I volunteered. It worked.”

Meanwhile, in Shimla Mirchi, his cameo was devoid of violence. He plays a charming man who’s seated on a bench on a road in Shimla. Hema Malini’s character, who has just received a love letter, mistakes Ramesh Sippy to be the one who wrote it. The filmmaker confesses that he didn’t pen any letter to her. A coy Hema Malini suddenly gets enraged and leaves.

Lastly, Ramesh Sippy also opened on his equation with Shah Rukh Khan, whom he directed in Zamaana Deewana (1995). He said, “He was introduced by my father G P Sippy, in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), although that was not his first release. His first release was Deewana (1992). He’s a nice guy and a fine actor. Even the other day at Filmfare, he spoke well.”
