As Ram Gopal Varma’s cult classic Shiva gears up for a 4K Dolby Atmos re-release, filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga and actor Nagarjuna joined Varma for a nostalgic discussion — one that unexpectedly led to a candid reflection on Ranbir Kapoor’s journey with Animal.
During their chat, Ram Gopal Varma asked Vanga how actors had responded to the film’s intense and unconventional scenes. To this, Vanga replied, “Ranbir never had a doubt. Ranbir said everything is so new.”
Nagarjuna, who had worked with Ranbir during Brahmastra, chimed in with a memory that revealed the actor’s enthusiasm long before Animal even began filming. “I remember that time I was doing Brahmastra with him, and he was only talking about Animal that he was going to start. At that time, he had not started Animal,” he said.
“He was pulling out Arjun Reddy. Not the Hindi version, but the Telugu one. He was showing some scenes — one where Vijay Deverakonda is kissing the girl — and he was saying, ‘this is so real.’ He was very, very excited to start that film,” Nagarjuna added with a smile.
The anecdote offers an interesting contrast to Ranbir Kapoor’s state of mind before Animal began filming. Just a few months ago, Anil Kapoor, who played Ranbir’s father in Animal, had shared at the FICCI Frames event that the actor was emotionally affected by the commercial failure of Shamshera. “He was very down and said, ‘Sab mujhe dekh rahe hai. Itni badi flop di hai maine.’ I told him, ‘Ek acha shot dete hai, kal tak bhool jayega,’” Anil had recalled.
Despite the initial self-doubt, Animal went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters of its year, reaffirming Ranbir’s box-office pull — even as the film drew widespread debate for its violent and misogynistic undertones.
