Alia Bhatt celebrates Halloween with Tumbbad’s iconic Hastar mask, sparks excitement around Tumbbad 2

Alia Bhatt brought a touch of Indian folklore horror to her Halloween celebrations this year by posing with the iconic mask of Hastar from Tumbbad. The actor shared a picture of herself with the mask on social media, accompanying it with the caption, "Happy Halloween" and the hashtag #HastarForHalloween. Her post has caught the attention of fans, with many drawing a connection between the festive moment and the growing anticipation around Tumbbad 2.

Released in 2018, Tumbbad gradually developed a strong following for its distinctive blend of folklore, horror and fantasy. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, the film followed Vinayak Rao’s obsession with wealth and his encounters with Hastar, a mythical entity associated with a cursed treasure. Its atmospheric storytelling and visual treatment helped it acquire cult status over the years.

The film returned to theatres in 2024, finding a fresh audience and recording a notable box-office performance during its re-release. Its renewed popularity also brought greater attention to the possibility of expanding the world of Tumbbad, with the sequel now among the projects generating curiosity among fans of the original.

Tumbbad 2 is being produced under the banner of Sohum Shah Films, with Sohum Shah returning to headline the franchise. The upcoming period mythological horror drama is expected to build on the world established in the first film, with the story reportedly moving beyond Vinayak Rao’s pursuit of gold and exploring themes surrounding immortality and ancient supernatural forces.

The sequel is also expected to feature an expanded ensemble cast and a larger scale, while continuing to draw from Indian folklore. The narrative is said to carry forward the legacy of Vinayak’s son, Pandurang, taking the story into another chapter of the cursed village and its mysteries.

With the original film’s re-release introducing its unsettling world to more viewers, Tumbbad 2 is being positioned as the next instalment in the franchise. The sequel is currently targeting a worldwide theatrical release in 2027. Alia’s Halloween post has offered fans another reminder of the film’s enduring imagery, particularly the unsettling presence of Hastar.
