Boman Irani dismisses The Mehta Boys and Animal comparisons: “Not every father-son film has to be similar or share the same themes”

Boman Irani is making his directorial debut with The Mehta Boys, a film centered on a father-son conflict. He plays the elder Mehta, while Avinash Tiwary takes on the role of his son. The trailer teases an emotional drama, but many have noticed similarities to Animal, the Ranbir Kapoor-Anil Kapoor film that also depicted a tense father-son dynamic.

Boman Irani dismissed comparisons between The Mehta Boys and Animal, saying not all films about familial bonds are the same.

Boman Irani acknowledged the difference, stating that The Mehta Boys takes a softer, more realistic approach, unlike Animal’s intense portrayal of masculinity.

He said, “I think it’s the same medium; it's all about the director’s vision. They chose a certain tonality and style—it’s their direction.”

Addressing the comparisons, Boman added, “They are quite different, although I haven’t seen Animal, so I can’t comment on its theme. But our film is about two people at a crossroads, dealing with a huge conflict. It’s about one boy becoming a man, while another is losing that. It’s about realising that power can shift. We are focusing on that nuance.”

“Not every father-son film has to be similar or share the same themes. I don’t buy that. Good luck to the other filmmakers, but this is a completely different film,” he stated.

Avinash Tiwary, who was also part of the interview, cheekily added, “People who went to watch a father-son story in Animal and didn’t find it—they can come watch The Mehta Boys.”

Also starring Shreya Chaudhry and Puja Sarup, The Mehta Boys premieres on Prime Video on February 7.
