6 years of Badla: Taapsee opens up about how Badla was an unconventional Bollywood film; says, “It had no comedy, no songs, no high-octane fight sequences”

On the 6th anniversary of Badla, we celebrate a film that challenged cinematic norms and featured the reunion of Taapsee Pannu with Amitabh Bachchan after their critically acclaimed Pink. Known for her unconventional films, Taapsee has consistently redefined what it means to be a modern actress in Indian cinema. Yet again, an example of it was Badla – a power-packed thriller inspired by a Spanish film.

“Badla had no comedy, no songs, no high-octane fight sequences, and very little that typically defines commercial cinema. In fact, much of it defied convention: a murder mystery driven by dialogue, two characters engaged in an intense conversation for most of the film, and a female antagonist at its core. And yet, the results spoke for themselves—made on a modest budget, it went on to earn very well at the box office, proving that strong storytelling always finds its audience, said Taapsee.

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview, Taapsee had opened up on the impact of the film to PTI wherein she had shared, “A lot of waking up has happened after Badla. I feel that audiences are now ready for something that is not done before, something unconventional. The concept of not taking your brain to the theatre is slowly going out of the window. People want to take the brain to the theatre,” the actress had asserted.

Coming to the film, being a remake of the 2016 film The Invisible Guest, the story follows an interview between a lawyer and a businesswoman, in which the latter insists that she is being wrongfully framed for the murder of her lover. Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Amrita Singh, Tony Luke, Manav Kaul, among others in key roles, the film released on March 8, 2019.

Looking ahead, fans have even more to be excited about as Taapsee will next be seen in Gandhari. Written by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Devashish Makhija, the film is another power-packed female-centric drama of mother's relentless pursuit to find and rescue her kidnapped daughter, exploring themes of revenge and redemption amidst her harrowing journey.
