EXCLUSIVE: Harshvardhan Rane BLASTS podcast culture: "In a podcast, you talk about about aapke saath kya galat hua aur doosre log kitne galat hote hai; why do you want say stuff which is going to benefit only the podcaster but it doesn't help you in any way?"

It is the era of podcasts and several important film personalities, political figures, businessmen, sportsmen, etc, can be seen on various podcast channels. But one popular actor who is conspicuous by his absence in the podcast space is Harshvardhan Rane. The dashing actor, whose film Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) has set new records upon its re-release, spoke about it during an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama on February 6.

Harshvardhan Rane began by saying, “You’ll never see me in a podcast. This is because actors tend to over-talk on podcasts and then they feel, ‘Waah humne kya baat bol di’, especially when the host is enjoying and clapping over their statements. They get a therapy-type feeling ki koi baith ke meri baat sunn raha hai. Somebody listening to you patiently in a noise-free room is something that people enjoy the most. To be heard is one of the top three needs of a human being. A podcast is psychologically sufficing that need. It tricks you into saying random things which will not translate into more footfalls for your upcoming film. There are so many such instances where a great podcast happened lekin picture dekhne koi nahin gaya. Then why do you do it? Why do you want to say stuff which is going to benefit only the podcast person, but it doesn’t help you in any way?”

He drew parallels with his stint of distributing pamphlets during the release of his 2024 film Dange. He said, “One can argue that ‘Aapne pamphlet baanta. Kya faayda hua?’. But at least, I am going on the ground and trying something, which is not easy. At least, I am not pulling something down, which happens in a podcast. The main criteria of a podcast are to talk about aapke saath kya galat hua aur doosre log kitne galat hote hai. These are the two things that podcasters make reel off and spread.”

Harshvardhan Rane continued, “The one word that runs in my mind all along is conversion. If you tell me to jump out of this window, I’ll do it if it benefits me in some way. If not, I’ll tell you, ‘Nahin bhai. Taang toot jaayegi. Kal kaam pe jaana hai’. Hence, if you insist, ‘Harsh, you should do a podcast. Everyone is doing it’, my immediate question would be, ‘Conversion kitna hota hai?’. If you don’t have an answer, I’ll not do it. It’s as simple as that. Conversion kara do. Main kahin bhi chala jaunga. You know that very well (smiles). If the podcast helps me, then I can sit with the mic in front of my face the whole day.”
